The Will of Elizabeth Lilley, widow, of Bosbury, 1719


 
Summary:  Transcription of the probate copy of the Will of Elizabeth Lilley, widow, of Bosbury dated 30th May 1719 listing as the main beneficiaries her sons, Samuel, William and Thomas, and her daughters, Abigail, Anne, Alice and Mary Lilley who were all under 21 years old. From the parish registers, Elizabeth’s husband was Thomas Lilley and, at the time the will was written in 1719, William was 17 and the girls were 19, 16, 13 and 11.  The probate copy is in a bound ledger at the Herefordshire Record Office, ref. AA20 Volume 26 page 102.

    In the name of God Amen. I, Elizabeth Lilley, of the parish of Bosbury in the County of Hereford, widow, being sick and weak of body but of a sound and well-disposing mind and memory, all laud and praise be given to Almighty God for the same, do make this my present Last Will and Testament in manner and form following (Vizt) first and principally I commit and commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping to be saved through the alone merits and mediation of my blessed Saviour and redeemer, Jesus Christ, and my body I commit to the Earth from whence it was taken to be decently interred according to the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named and as for touching such worldly Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with all, I dispose of the same as followeth.

Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my eldest son, Samuel Lilley the sum of five shillings of lawful money of Great Britain.  Item I give unto my son, William Lilley, the sum of four score pounds of like lawful money to be paid him when he shall attain the age of one and twenty years.  Item I give unto my eldest daughter, Abigail Lilley, the sum of forty pounds of like lawful money to be paid her when she shall attain the age of one and twenty years and also the best bed in the parlour chamber with two pair of sheets and all things appertaining to the said bed.  Item I give unto my second daughter, Anne Lilley, the sum of fifty pounds of like lawful money to be paid her when she shall attain to the age of one and twenty years and also the other bed in the said parlour chamber with two pair of sheets and all things appertaining to the said bed. Item I give unto my third daughter, Alice Lilley, the sum of sixty pounds of like lawful money to be paid her when she shall attain to the age of one and twenty years and also the bed where I usually lodged with two pair of sheets and all things belonging to the said bed.  Item I give unto my fourth daughter Mary Lilley, the sum of sixty pounds of like lawful money to be paid her when she shall attain to the age of one and twenty years and also the bed over the kitchen with two pair of sheets and all things belonging to the said bed.  Item my will is that my Executor shall pay unto my said son William Lilley the sum of one pound of like lawful money yearly to my daughter Anne Lilley the sum of two pounds of lawful money, yearly to my said daughter Alice Lilley the sum of five pounds of like lawful money, yearly and to my said daughter Mary Lilley the sum of ten pounds of like lawful money yearly, till they shall attain their several and respective ages of one and twenty years.   Item my will is that if any of my said children or either of them shall die before they come to the age of one and twenty years then that the legacy of him, her or them so dying shall be equally divided between the rest of my said children (my said son Samuel Lilley only excepted).

Item all the rest, residue and remainder of my goods, cattle, chattels, household stuff, money, plate, bonds, mortgages debts, dues and demands and discharges, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Lilley whom I make Sole Executor of this my last will and testament revoking all other wills by me heretofore made and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I the said Elizabeth Lilley, the Testatrix to this my last Will and Testament, have put my hand and seal this thirtieth day of May Anno Domini 1719.
