Letter from Mrs. Marian Buck to her Tenants 8th March 1920
To my Tenants
I confidently appeal to my Tenants to join with me in the restoration of our Church. We are fortunate in possessing one of exceptional interest and beauty, but beyond this we look to the Church as our Spiritual Home. Whether we attend the Services regularly or not, it is to the Church that we go for the Baptism of the children, for the Solemnization of Marriage, & for the beautiful & hopeful Service for the Burial of the dead. — Therefore it is our duty to preserve and restore our beloved Church, which has been handed down in trust to us, a trust to which we are in honour bound to be faithful, not only for the sake of those who come after us, but for the Glory of God in Bosbury.
You have always responded generously whenever I have asked your help for any good object, & I am sure you will do so now when I make an appeal on behalf of our Church which should come before anything else. As you all know the cost of building has greatly increased & is still rising. Since the fire in July 1917, the roof has been restored, a new heating apparatus has been put in & various small repairs have been carried out. This has more than absorbed the insurance money. Repairs to the walls of the Church were overdue when the fire occurred & before a War Memorial can be erected , the church must be restored. For the structural repairs at least £400 will be required in addition to subscriptions already given (£700 from the late Mr. Buchanan and £700 from the Vicar. £50 from Mrs. Grindley & various smaller sums) I am giving £450 for the new Vestry, Miss Beith £50 for Vestry fittings & My tenant Miss Kempson £500 for special gifts (window, inner porch etc). I ask my other Tenants to do your utmost towards the £400 needed. Is it too much to hope that between you, you will give at least one quarter of this sum (£100 or more) and so set an example which, I trust, will be followed by others. — There is no time to lose. Further delay will mean increased cost.
I am sure I shall not appeal to my Tenants in vain.
