History
In France the story is that this puzzle has its origin in Thailand with the epic poem where a nobleman, Khun Phaen, breaks out of prison by overcoming its nine sentries. The same layout with the unique horizontal block placed below the two square blocks was patented in England in 1934 by John Harold Fleming. However the puzzle had been around for some time with the same number and shapes of blocks. In France it had been produced as
LÂ
ne Rouge (The “Red Donkey”); in Poland it was known as “Klocki” meaning wooden blocks; in Japan as “Daughter in the Box” (Hakoiri musume). The classic puzzle we have here has the horizontal block placed above the two square blocks.
