Simple Crossword Puzzle

The crossword puzzle first appeared in the ‘New York World’ magazine on December 21, 1913. It was a diamond-shaped word puzzle invented by Arthur Wynne, an English journalist working in New York. He called it ‘Word-cross’. By January the name had been changed to ‘Cross-word’ and by 1921 the familiar Across and Down arrangement of clues had appeared.
The puzzle arrived in England in ‘Pearson’s Magazine’ in February 1922 introduced as ‘a new form of puzzle in the shape of a Word Square’. The first ‘Times’ crossword appeared on February 1 1930. The rest is history.
